Dylan Crooks
Dylan Crooks is a developing tattoo artist and oil painter born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario.
When Dylan started with In Detail Art, he was entirely self-taught with no formal art training. He began his apprenticeship under the tutelage of Marius Samulevičius, learning the fundamentals of realism-style tattooing. Since beginning with In Detail Art, his studies have expanded, from basic shapes and perspective to the complexity of understanding light and shadow on the human form.
Dylan’s motivation to begin painting emerged from his love of tattooing as an art form, specifically, the aspect of colour matching and mixing. While in his tattoo apprenticeship, he completed his first painting as a project given to him by his mentor. Since his first attempt, his love and appreciation for the art form has only grown, and he has enjoyed finding his own voice through painting.
Within his painting, Dylan’s specific style and subject matter vary. He is currently interested in learning the basics of different techniques. Rather than specialize in a single technique or style, Dylan strives to broaden his knowledge base by exploring a variety of forms. He wants to learn everything he can and not limit himself.
He feels that having the skill to produce high quality realism gives him “permission” to break convention in novel and interesting ways.
At the moment, Dylan is studying how colours have the capability to implement their characteristics into the stories and messages of his work, adding a depth of meaning to what the viewer experiences. His use of bold colours attract the eye and help to give a pronounced and unique feeling to each of his paintings.
